How to plan a successful workshop fit-out.

A workshop fit-out is one of the most disruptive projects a business takes on — the layout you choose today drives efficiency, safety and servicing costs for the next decade. This guide walks through the practical planning steps we use with SmartWorx customers when scoping a new build, an upgrade or a full relocation.

1. Map the workflow first

Start with how work actually moves through the workshop — arrival, inspection, service bays, wash, dispatch — and lay the bays out around that flow. Equipment positioning follows the workflow, not the other way around.

2. Choose the right lifting equipment

Two-post lifts suit light-duty automotive work. Four-post and in-ground systems handle heavier vehicles and alignment. Mobile column lifts give flexibility for buses, trucks and coaches. Match the equipment to the fleet mix and daily throughput.

3. Plan hydraulic and air services

Position compressors, hydraulic power packs, reticulation, hose reels and fluid-management lines close to where the work happens. Pressure drops, cable runs and fluid delivery all compound if services are an afterthought.

4. Networking, power and data

Diagnostic tools, brake testers and connected equipment all need reliable power and structured cabling. Plan conduit runs, cabinet locations and Wi-Fi coverage before the concrete goes down.

5. Safety, clearances and compliance

Allow safe working clearances around lifts, plan lighting and ventilation, and set up inspection and servicing routines that keep equipment compliant with manufacturer guidance.

6. Build in room to grow

Leave conduit, power and data capacity so future equipment can be added without tearing the workshop apart. A fit-out that can absorb change lasts far longer than one optimised for today only.
